Salon Etiquette: Three Things to Keep in Mind

Visiting a hair salon may be something you love or hate, but it is essential to have your hair trimmed and get your colour touched up. Unfortunately, far too many people don't know the proper way to conduct themselves in a salon. Here are some things to keep in mind the next time you make an appointment for a cut, colour, or style at your local establishment.

Know How to Tip

Your hair stylist worked hard giving you a cut or colour you will love, so it is always a good idea to tip them. Consider the percentage you would pay another establishment that provided you with good service, and use that as a guide. You can always tip more if you believe the hairdresser went above and beyond. If you got a complex hair treatment, that is another reason to consider tipping more. You might also want to tip others that helped during the process, such as the person who shampooed your hair or the hairstylist's assistant, though tipping others can be a small flat fee, instead of a percentage of the service provided.

Don't Talk on the Phone

While texting and checking apps on your cell phone is something hair stylists have come to expect, talking on the phone is something else entirely. This is typically frowned upon for a number of reasons. First of all, talking on the phone when your hairdresser is trying to provide a beautiful haircut can be distracting. The noise is not only distracting for your own hair dresser, but others in the hair salon. It can also interrupt the cutting or colouring process, especially if you become more animated. It is best that you leave the conversations for when your hair stylist is done with your hair and only text during the appointment.

Try to Arrive on Time

If you have made an appointment instead of walking into the hair salon, make sure you are on time. Being a couple minutes late is not usually a problem, but if you are too late, it affects the hairdresser's other appointments. You being late means they run late with all appointments during the day. If you know you are going to be late to the appointment, call the salon and let them know. If they don't have someone right after you, you might still be asked to show up as soon as you can. Otherwise, you may need to adjust your appointment.

Keep these tips in mind the next time you visit a local salon like Kenricks Hair & Makeup, and you'll make the most of the experience for you and the staff.
